Several community gardens Jigsaw helps to support have been recognised as some of the best in the North West.
Four gardens were announced as winners in the RHS Northwest In Bloom ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ Awards, as voted for by RHS judges, who visited in the summer and met the volunteers in person. They are:
- Acresfield Community Garden – Awarded Outstanding
- Tinsley Close Alleyway. Miles Platting – Awarded Outstanding
- Moss Side Community Allotment and Garden Society – Awarded Outstanding
- Dukinfield Central Community Garden – Awarded Thriving
All the gardens are supported by the Neighbourhood Plans Officers who cover the areas to help them prepare so they can enter the RHS competition.
Joseph Cocks from Dukinfield Central thanked the team for their support. He said: “It’s taken a lot of hard work and dedication to bring the garden back to life after the pandemic and the volunteers are proud to have gained this award in our first year of entering the RHS competition.”
In Nottingham, the Netherfield Community Allotment won Gedling Borough Council’s annual competition for ‘Best Community Garden.’
And it was a double celebration for Acresfield who also scooped this year’s ‘Best Community Garden’ award in the Jigsaw Homes’ Gardening competition, which is voted for by residents through Jigsaw Rewards.
The garden on Moorcroft Square in Newton, Hyde has a dedicated team of residents who ensure that it is maintained, is inclusive and promotes health and wellbeing. It has also benefitted from £940 in funding from the Jigsaw Foundation.
Other winners were Derek Shawcross of Baron Road in Gee Cross who won ‘Most Creative Small Space’ and Rosemary Cusiter, of Ashurst Gardens who was awarded the ‘Best Individual Garden.’
All winners received a £75 gift voucher and certificate.
