Children in Tameside enjoyed the outdoors and learned about bicycle safety as part of a new pilot scheme led by Jigsaw Homes.
Jigsaw’s Neighbourhood Engagement Team worked with Tameside Council to host Playstreets – an activity fueled event to teach children essential ‘bikeability’ skills.
Residential streets in Moorcroft Square in Hyde were closed off to allow children to play outside and ride their bicycles safely and freely.
Tameside Council’s Youth Services also attended the event to run their Learn to Ride sessions to teach people how to ride a bicycle safely and encourage more people to use active travel.
Bike fixing was also available with up to 15 bikes mended on the day and made roadworthy again.
While children were able to play outside and make new friends, Playstreets also encouraged adults to get outside, meet their neighbours and build up community spirit and a local coffee morning group provided refreshments.
Neighbourhood Engagement Officer Tanuja Patel said: “It was great to see so many residents and families coming out to enjoy the day during half term, and to see how easy it is to be active and cycle. After the success of our event, we hope to arrange another Playstreets in the Spring and Summer months for more of our residents to enjoy.”
