Women across Tameside came together and wore a touch of pink to help raise money and increase awareness of breast cancer at a charity fundraiser at Ashton Central Mosque.
The fundraiser was organised by Tameside Health Group and part funded by our Neighbourhood Engagement team. It included a tasty afternoon tea, a fashion show, a raffle and talks from several guest speakers.
Speakers from charity Prevent Breast Cancer shared information around how and when to check for signs of breast cancer and nutritionist and author Norah Cozens discussed diet advice. Cancer survivors who had been treated at Wythenshawe Hospital were also invited to share their own personal stories with those in attendance.
Around 100 people attended the event, including our officers Minaz Aslam and Julie Frazer, Sharman Birtles MBE Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Manchester, Madam Mayor of Tameside Cllr Betty Affleck, Councillor Tafheen Sharif and our partners Tameside Council.
The fundraiser was an important way to raise awareness of breast cancer; a disease that can affect anyone no matter their ethnicity, while also encouraging attendees to feel more comfortable around this topic. Altogether, £2,500 was raised on the day.
Councillor Tafheen Sharif said: “This was a successful event in bringing people and communities together from many backgrounds.
“As well as raising funds for a vital cause, it was educational, allowing women a chance to listen to health information and advice in a safe environment.
“My congratulations to volunteer Nabeela and the team for organising such a high-end afternoon tea, packed with much fun including three fashion shows, while sending a clear message of self-care and getting regular check-ups- something that is amiss for many busy women.
“Well done for bringing us women together from many differing communities and for a successful event.”
