Pupils at Fairfield Road Primary School in Droyldsen learned creative ways to meditate and stay mindful for Children’s Mental Health Week last week.
This year’s theme was ‘My Voice Matters’ and encouraged young people to know the difference they can make when their voices are heard by boosting their self-esteem and creating a greater sense of community.
Organised by Jigsaw’s Neighbourhood Engagement Team, schoolchildren met teacher Jess Wilkinson, from the children’s mindfulness company ‘The Sea Within’, who delivered relaxing sessions across the week.
The children learned calming breathing techniques, meditation, and mindful art to understand their emotions and connect with themselves, each other and nature.
Gemma Batchelor, Jigsaw’s Neighbourhood Engagement Officer, said: “It’s so important for children to feel heard and know that their voice matters. The activities that Jess has provided not only brought out the creative side of the children, but it also allowed them to open-up about their feelings and emotions in a safe space.
“Jess gave the children tools on how to deal with big emotions and how to help process them. The children were so grateful for the experience and their big smiles spoke for just how much they enjoyed their time. It’s also great to hear how the school plans to incorporate moments of calm in class moving forwards”.
