Lincoln Avenue Community Allotment in Tameside was recently refurbished by residents and the Jigsaw Homes Neighbourhood Engagement team.
The former derelict space was transformed to create a sustainable allotment and grow fruit and vegetables for the local community to eventually pick and eat.
Jigsaw provided two polytunnels, alongside compost and fruit trees while residents chipped in to buy vegetable plugs, and seeds and helped to plant flowers.
This intergenerational project has brought residents of every age together, enhancing community spirit and forming new friendships.
Deanne Clayton, the Neighbourhood Engagement Officer said, “I have witnessed a massive change in the area with residents coming together introducing themselves, making new friendships and creating support networks.”
“The residents have now asked us to assist with an official opening ‘fun’ day in August when everything will be in full bloom with smoothie making stands, dips and crudités from the produce, bird feeder making stand, seed swapping opportunities and planting lessons for the children.”
